Man Utd tell Kobbie Mainoo what they expect of him in Deadline Day revelation
Manchester United midfielder Kobbie Mainoo has been told by the Old Trafford club their expectations for him.
Mainoo has requested a move away from Old Trafford on loan, but this has been knocked back by Ruben Amorim’s side.
The young midfielder had hoped to leave for a year in order to gain first-team football that would help his game develop and allow him to push for inclusion in Thomas Tuchel’s England squad for the World Cup.
He has been told, however, that will not be possible, with no changes in Amorim’s midfield set to take place on Deadline Day.
“United expect him to fight for his place in Ruben Amorim's first team,” Danyal Khan told Sky Sports News.
“Reinforcing the midfield was an area United looked at in this window, but they are happy with their options, which include Manuel Ugarte, Casemiro, Bruno Fernandes, Mason Mount and Mainoo.”
Mainoo faces transfer frustration
Mainoo faces the prospect of being a backup option in the mind of Amorim. Unfortunately for the young England star, the Portuguese sees Bruno Fernandes as the player ahead of him. The Man Utd captain is unlikely to be dropped unless there is a major U-turn in the thinking of the manager.
With no European football and no prospect even of being rotated into a Carabao Cup team, Mainoo will have to make do with what opportunities he is given in the league. These are not expected to be significant, so when he does play, the pressure will be on him to perform to a high standard.
Many United fans have questioned why he has been made such a peripheral figure in Amorim’s thinking, although he struggled to make a positive impression in the League Cup loss to Grimsby Town last week.
There was plenty of interest in Mainoo, with the likes of Tottenham, Everton and Marseille among the teams following him.
