Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher has aimed yet more criticism at Chelsea by claiming they are “more interested in transfers than trophies.”

The Sky Sports pundit has constantly slammed Enzo Maresca’s side since the arrival of BlueCo as their new owners in 2022 and he has now issued a fresh tirade ahead of their clash against Brighton & Hove Albion this weekend.

Carragher recently claimed that Chelsea wouldn’t win the Premier League title “in 100 years” with their current crop of goalkeepers and centre-backs, while he has previously questioned why any young player in world football would want to join the west London outfit due to their controversial transfer strategy.

In his latest column for The Telegraph, Carragher took the opportunity to claim that Chelsea “look more interested in transfers than trophies.”

Maresca guided the Blues to Club World Cup glory in July - meaning they can now be considered world champions for the next four years - while the club also picked up the Europa Conference League trophy earlier this year after beating Real Betis 4-1 in the final.

However, the club sanctioned a total of 55 transfers during the summer window, when including incomings and outgoings from U18, U21 and senior level, and their squad still seems significantly weaker than the likes of Arsenal, Manchester City and Liverpool.

Chelsea have spent nearly €1.8 billion on new signings since the new owners took charge in 2022, yet Carragher believes their investment hasn’t yielded the success it should have.

Jamie Carragher slams Chelsea’s transfer policy

“Chelsea have achieved the near impossible since Roman Abramovich sold up. They have spent £1.5bn to transform themselves from serial winners of major trophies to serial project managers,” Carragher wrote for The Telegraph.

“The club who once sent fear through their Premier League rivals with their determination to win big prizes right here, right now, appear to be preoccupied with building for the future.

“Chelsea should be title contenders and considered Champions League challengers this season. Instead, their hierarchy seems content to be praised for being the smartest recruiters in the business - the world’s richest development club.”

Carragher added: “Eventually, Chelsea must settle on a squad which needs a couple of tweaks to compete for a title and Champions League. They look like they enjoy recruiting too much for that to happen any time soon…

“Manchester City showed what ambitious clubs do when an obvious issue needs sorting out, signing Gianluigi Donnarumma. Why were Chelsea not part of the conversation for the PSG keeper? He could have been a transformative signing for them…

“Five games into this season, Maresca has a right to feel let down by his recruiters,” the ex-Liverpool said.”

“It is all a bit cosy and comfortable in an era of signing so many players between 17-22 and dishing out seven-year contracts. It feels like a clever trick to win praise for ingenious accounting and to justify calls for patience and time for a side to mature fully.”
