Timo Werner to BLAME for Xavi Simons rejecting Chelsea
Xavi Simons has revealed that Timo Werner played a key role in his move from RB Leipzig to Tottenham Hotspur this summer.
The Netherlands international, who completed a €65 million transfer to north London last week, was expected to join Chelsea, but the Blues failed to reach an agreement with Leipzig, despite finalising personal terms with the player.
As a result, the proposed move failed to materialise and Simons joined Tottenham instead, with Chelsea eventually landing Facundo Buonanotte on loan from Brighton & Hove Albion to bolster their attacking roster.
Simons, 22, is set to play a pivotal role under Thomas Frank at Spurs, with James Maddison sidelined with an ACL injury, and he has confirmed why he opted to join the club this summer.
Xavi Simons confirms reason for joining Tottenham
While on international duty with the Netherlands, Simons explained why he decided to join Tottenham, despite interest from Chelsea and Bundesliga giants Bayern Munich.
“I’m happy to be a Tottenham player. Since I was a child, it’s been my dream to play in the Premier League,” Simons told German newspaper Leipziger Volkszeitung (via The Evening Standard).
“The club’s vision, the magnificent stadium, the fans, the quality of the team, the coach - it’s a fantastic environment. I want to settle in quickly in my new home and show why Tottenham signed me.”
He added: “The most important thing was to find a place where I could develop and express my playing style. That’s the way it is at Spurs.
“My first impressions of the club are great; I felt the energy and ambition when I was introduced to the fans. Expectations are high, both for the team and for me. I’m looking forward to duels against the best players in the world.”
Simons then confirmed that Werner advised him to join Tottenham this summer, despite the fact the ex-Germany international struggled immensely in north London.
“He told me a lot about the club’s greatness and the fantastic fans. And he said he thought it was the right place for me to learn and improve. Thanks for your trust, Timo!”
Werner spent 18 months on loan at Tottenham before returning to RB Leipzig this summer, although he started just four Premier League fixtures last term and he only scored three goals in a total of 41 games for the club.
