Unai Emery’s side have snapped up talented Scottish teenager Fletcher Boyd from Aberdeen for a fee that is thought to be in the region of €1.2 million (£1m).

The 17-year-old midfielder has played 12 times for the Dons’ first team but has struggled to make an impression under Jimmy Thelin, despite coming off the bench in two of their first three Premiership games of the season. Boyd has two senior goals to his credit, both coming as a substitute at the end of the 2023/4 season.

Aberdeen confirmed the move by posting on their social channels: “Fletcher Boyd has today left the Dons to join Aston Villa’s Academy.

“Everyone at Aberdeen FC would like to thank Fletcher for his time and effort whilst at the Dons and wish him every success in his future career in England.”

Boyd joins the likes of Calvin Ramsay and Lewis Ferguson to leave the club in big-money deals in recent season, with his move hailed as a “landmark deal” for the Pittodrie club.

Fletcher Boyd deal not planned

Aberdeen have admitted that they wanted to retain Boyd for a little longer.

Director of football Steven Gunn says they were ultimately forced into the move.

Speaking to the Press and Journal, he explained: “Fletcher is not one we had planned or wanted to sell at this time, but we’ve had to take this approach based on the circumstances we found ourselves in.

“It was made very clear to us that Fletcher wished to explore this opportunity and that signing any contract extension beyond the less than two years remaining on his current agreement was going to be very unlikely.

“Therefore, we felt that now was the optimal time to trade him to not only maximise our value in the short term, but also to ensure there is significant potential upside for AFC in the future should Fletcher develop the way we all hope he does.”

In the meantime, Aberdeen have added former Southampton midfielder Stuart Armstrong to their squad after snapping up Scotland international forward Kevin Nisbet before the transfer deadline.
