Cardiff City have officially completed the signing of Chelsea midfielder Omari Kellyman on a season-long loan deal.

Article continues under the video

The 19-year-old joined Chelsea from Aston Villa in a highly-controversial move last summer, with the Blues spending a whopping €22.5 million to acquire his signature, despite the fact he had only made six first-team appearances for Unai Emery’s side.

Chelsea subsequently sold Ian Maatsen to the Villa Park outfit and both clubs benefitted hugely from a PSR perspective due to the ‘pure profit’ nature of the two deals.

However, Kellyman endured an injury-hit first season at Chelsea and he only played four times for the club’s U21 side, while he failed to make his competitive senior debut.

He returned to full fitness over the summer and he has been heavily linked with a loan move throughout the transfer window as Chelsea look to prioritise his development before integrating him into the senior side or sell for a profit.

Multiple EFL clubs were touted as possible destinations for Kellyman, but he has now formally completed a loan move to League One high-flyers Cardiff on Transfer Deadline Day.

Brian Barry-Murphy‘s side have enjoyed a fantastic start to the 2025-26 season, picking up five wins and one draw in their opening six League One fixtures following their relegation from the Championship.

Omari Kellyman completes Chelsea loan move

In the process of his loan move to Cardiff, Kellyman has become the 44th player to either leave or join Chelsea so far this summer.

The Blues have been extremely active in the market once again and they are expected to end the summer window with a positive transfer balance after prioritising player sales after receiving a warning from UEFA over financial breaches.

Chelsea’s number of outgoings and incomings is set to rise further before the end of Transfer Deadline Day, with Facundo Buonanotte expected to join the club and Raheem Sterling among the potential departures.
