Chelsea to appoint Ruben Amorim? Man Utd boss is 'the perfect fit'
Arsenal legend Paul Merson believes that under-fire Manchester United boss Ruben Amorim would’ve been the “perfect fit” for Chelsea.
Amorim, 40, has endured a torrid 10-month spell at Old Trafford, following his arrival from Sporting CP last November, and he has been heavily linked with the sack in recent weeks.
Man Utd have accumulated the fewest points (31) of any ever-present Premier League club since Amorim’s arrival and reports suggest that he may be fired by the October international break if he is unable to improve results soon.
Merson believes that Amorim’s lack of tactical flexibility could cost him his job at Old Trafford, although he feels as though the 40-year-old’s style of play would actually work well if he was the manager of Chelsea.
“Ruben Amorim, the way he wants to play, is a worry,” Merson told Sky Sports.
“He won't change. He'll look at it and say 'I've got where I am today by playing the way I play', using three at the back and high wing-backs.
“He would have been a perfect fit for Chelsea. They've got world-class wing-backs in Reece James and Malo Gusto, they've got the best holding midfield player in the league in Moises Caicedo. It would fit the players.”
Merson continued: “You look at Man United and this system does not suit the squad they've got at all. The two wing-backs are nowhere near it, nowhere near good enough. And they are a big part of this formation working. No legs in midfield. Everything is up against him.”
Ruben Amorim to Chelsea?
Although Merson believes that Amorim is well-suited to joining Chelsea, a move to Stamford Bridge is incredibly unlikely due to the presence of Enzo Maresca.
Despite poor spells throughout his debut season in the Stamford Bridge dugout, Maresca guided Chelsea to Europa Conference League glory during his first campaign in charge, while he also helped the club qualify for the Champions League for the first time since 2022-23.
Furthermore, Chelsea then won the inaugural summer Club World Cup in July, and they are currently unbeaten in their first four Premier League matches so far this year.
