OFFICIAL: Tottenham sign Xavi Simons after Chelsea hijack
Tottenham have officially completed the signing of RB Leipzig attacking midfielder Xavi Simons in a deal worth a reported €60 million.
The 22-year-old has penned a long-term contract at Stamford Bridge that runs until 2032 and he has become Spurs' seventh signing of the summer transfer window.
Simons only joined Leipzig on a permanent deal in January, following a successful 18-month loan spell from Paris Saint-Germain, but he has already left the club after they failed to secure European football last term.
The Netherlands international, who has 28 senior caps for his nation and scored against England in the European Championship semi-final last summer, is expected to replace James Maddison, who will miss the majority of the season with an ACL injury.
Simons is naturally an attacking midfielder, although he is capable of featuring as a winger, which means that he will offer Thomas Frank plenty of tactical flexibility.
The Dutchman, who only made 11 first-team appearances for PSG, has left RB Leipzig having racked up 46 goal contributions in 78 games for the Bundesliga outfit.
Xavi Simons joins Spurs
Simons has joined an attacking unit that already contains the likes of Mohammed Kudus, Brennan Johnson, Dominic Solanke, Richarlison, Mathys Tel, Wilson Odobert and the currently injured Dejan Kulusevski.
Manor Solomon and Bryan Gil could be sold or loaned out by Spurs before the end of Deadline Day on 1 September. Simons has become the North London club's fourth most expensive signing ever.
Initially, the Dutchman looked set to join London rivals Chelsea, with the Blues in talks with Leipzig for weeks. However, they prioritised the signing of Alejandro Garnacho and needed sales to be able to sign Simons.
This presented an opportunity for Tottenham to swoop in with authority, and they swiftly managed to agree a deal for Simons, who had become tired of waiting for Chelsea to get their ducks in a row.
