‘Something Man Utd need to look into’ – Amorim told to beat Chelsea and City to wantaway star
Manchester United have been urged to replace goalkeeper Andre Onana with Gianluigi Donnarumma by one of the Italian’s former team-mates.
Donnarumma finds himself up for sale by PSG, with Chelsea and Manchester City among the teams lining up a move for the 26-year-old.
The goalkeeper has fallen out with the Ligue 1 side in spectacular style, with the player’s agent revealing that he is considering legal action against the UEFA Super Cup winners.
Asmir Begovic, the former Chelsea keeper and an ex-colleague of Donnarumma’s at AC Milan, believes it’s a no-brainer for Ruben Amorim’s to make the move as Andre Onana struggles to win over pundits.
“If we’re talking about Donnarumma in this case and being able to bring him in, I think it’s an upgrade. These things don’t come up every day. Maybe they feel it’s too good to pass up. For Onana to miss pre-season with injury is very unlucky, but if you can bring a goalkeeper with the calibre of Donnarumma into the building, I think it’s something Man Utd need to look into,” Begovic told Sky Sports.
“If a goalkeeper becomes available and you can upgrade your team, you have to look into doing it. For me, he’s one of the top-three goalkeepers in the world, and if Man City, Manchester United or Chelsea can bring him in, I think you have to do so.”
Donnarumma has no weaknesses, claims Begovic
Doubts have been raised about Donnarumma’s suitability to the Premier League due to perceived weaknesses with the ball at his feet and also his ability to cope with crosses. Begovic has dismissed these doubts in an encouraging sales pitch to Man Utd.
“He’s very much suited to the Premier League. I’ve seen his professional attitude, his work ethic, how good he is. All those attributes in his game are top class. He can definitely adapt to the Premier League. It’s a challenge for anyone so he might need a bit of adjustment,” he said.
“High balls, absolutely, shot-stopping incredible, his aggressiveness off the line is incredible. If you’re looking at distribution – and a lot of people are comparing him to Ederson – let’s be clear, Ederson is the best in the world. So we’re all behind him. He’s more than capable of playing with his feet.”
FootballTransfers revealed via the Transfers Podcast that Donnarumma is “fascinated” with the prospect of moving to Chelsea and is also interested in City, so Man Utd may have to act quickly if they don’t want to miss out.
