Newcastle take GIANT step to Isak sale as striker transfer edges closer
Newcastle could finally be closing in on a new striker after turning their attention to a Premier League forward who could finally solve Eddie Howe’s summer-long headache.
The Magpies have failed to convince a number of striker targets to join them this summer such as Liam Delap, Hugo Ekitike and Benjamin Sesko, leaving Anthony Gordon as the club’s makeshift number nine to start the season.
Newcastle had been deep in talks to sign Yoane Wissa but their second bid, worth a total of £40 million (€46m) was turned down by Brentford on Wednesday, leading Howe back to the drawing board once again.
Gordon is now expected to, once again, lead the line for Newcastle in their game against Liverpool on Monday, with Alexander Isak still on strike as he looks to force an exit from St James’ Park.
Irrespective of Isak’s future, Newcastle are desperate to sign at least one striker after seeing Callum Wilson’s contract expire and their focus is now believed to have shifted to Wolves’ Jorgen Strand Larsen.
Strand Larsen scored 14 goals on loan for Wolves last season, which led to them permanently signing him for €30m from Celta Vigo, but the Express and Star report that talks over a £60m (€69m) move to Newcastle have already begun.
Strand Larsen transfer not enough to secure Isak’s move to Liverpool
Newcastle would need to sign two strikers if the conditions are to be met to sell Isak to Liverpool this summer – something which the club said they ‘do not forsee being met’ in a fiery statement earlier this week.
Strand Larsen would be seen as a replacement for Wilson if a deal can be agreed with Wolves, with the Norwegian not believed to be pushing for a move despite personal terms reportedly being struck with Newcastle already.
It is claimed that Newcastle are just £5m away from Wolves valuation, suggesting that a deal could be close, although the Midlands side would also need a replacement if they are to make the reluctant sale of their talismanic forward.
Should Strand Larsen arrive, Newcastle would then only allow Isak to leave if Liverpool match their £150m (€173m) valuation and if a deal for Wissa could be revived.
Wissa returned to training with Brentford after Newcastle’s latest bid was rejected, with the 28-year-old having emulated Isak by also going on strike to try and force a move to St James’ Park, although it remains to be seen whether the Magpies return with another offer before the end of the month.
