CONFIRMED: Donnarumma transfer talks after PSG keeper drops Instagram hint
Gianluigi Donnarumma is in transfer talks with Premier League giants Chelsea and Manchester United after dropping an Instagram hint that he wants to leave PSG.
After contract talks with the Champions League winners broke down, Donnarumma, 26, finds himself being pushed out of the Parc des Princes door.
On Saturday, PSG moved to sign Lucas Chevalier from Lille for €40 million – a record for a French goalkeeper.
At the same time, Donnarumma was busy celebrating on holiday, leaving a message on a cake that leaves no doubt what he believes his status should be.
The Italy international posted a picture on his Instagram account with his family and the words “Numero 1” in front of his dessert.
Faced with the prospect of playing backup to Chevalier at PSG in the 2025/26 season, it was a clear sign that Donnarumma is not happy with his club.
Chelsea and Man Utd make enquiries
Donnarumma is subject to interest from both Chelsea and Man Utd, with the two Premier League sides having started to prepare the groundwork for a potential transfer, according to RMC.
The report from the French source confirms, however, that any move is still a long way off.
“The matter is still far from being resolved, as for now, it is only a simple expression of interest from the two English clubs. No formal discussions have yet been initiated with the player's entourage,” it states.
The Transfers Podcast has previously detailed PSG’s frustration with Donnarumma, with transfer insider Duncan Castles revealing what’s been going on behind the scenes at Parc des Princes.
"The interesting thing here is that during these discussions between Donnarumma and PSG through the summer, Donnarumma had told the club he had other options and, at a certain point, he said he did not want to stay at PSG," Castles explained.
"Now that PSG have bought a new goalkeeper, he's telling Paris that he would prefer to stay at the club, and he will consider staying and leaving the club under freedom of contract in a year's time.
"PSG are understandably unhappy about that. Information I have is that they have told Donnarumma they will not let him run down his deal and leave on a free transfer in the same style he did with Milan.
"They see what Donnarumma is doing as trying to reduce his transfer fee and trying to organise conditions under which he can leave, where most of the money spent on his transfer, i.e. the total package of the new club, goes towards his salary and signing-on fee rather than the transfer fee.”
As well as Chelsea and Man Utd, Manchester City may also make an approach for Donnarumma, who was one of the heroes of PSG’s Champions League victory.
