Fabrizio Romano says that Man Utd are working to sign a new goalkeeper before the end of the transfer window, and they plan to bring in one of two names.

Romano says that United remain in talks for Royal Antwerp star Senne Lammens but, despite coming to terms with the goalkeeper (also confirmed by Laurie Whitwell) they have not yet found an agreement with his club.

The Italian journalist says that the alternative to Lammens remains Aston Villa's Emiliano Martinez.

But the signing of Martinez depends on Jadon Sancho being included as part of the exchange. Villa are currently in negotiations for Sancho, who will leave Man Utd on Monday.

Romano stressed on Monday morning that only one of Lammens or Martinez will arrive.

What did Romano say?

"Man Utd are working to sign a new goalkeeper," Romano previously said on his YouTube channel on Sunday.

"They always had two goalkeepers on their shortlist.

"One is Senne Lammens. Man Utd remain in talks with Royal Antwerp. They have an agreement with the player.

"But Antwerp are still not accepting the offer from Man Utd because they believe that other clubs will jump into the race.

"The other name is Dibu Martinez of Aston Villa. Man Utd tried in July but there was no agreement with Aston Villa.

"Let's see what will happen but it is a crucial moment for goalkeepers."

United have have increased the urgency to sign a new goalkeeper after a poor start to the season by both Andre Onana and Altay Bayindir.

Bayindir has struggled in the Premier League, while Onana was a disappointment in the EFL Cup.

Long-term number one Onana is not expected to leave regardless of whether Lammens or Martinez arrives due to the difficulty of getting rid of him.

Big things were expected of the Cameroonian when he joined from inter for €55 million in the summer of 2023.

However, Onana endured an error-prone season in 2023-24, with United having their worst defensive record and most goals conceded in decades.

He made a string of mistakes, in particular in the Champions League group stage elimination in games against Galatasaray, Copenhagen and Bayern Munich.

Last season Onana improved a touch earlier in the campaign but he reverted to his first season's form in 2025 as United went trophyless and finished in 15th.

But he started the current campaign badly also, and he was benched for the 3-2 win over Burnley on Saturday after a poor performance in the shock EFL Cup defeat to Grimsby on Wednesday.
