Maresca makes revelation over Fofana Chelsea future
Enzo Maresca has spoken on Wesley Fofana’s state of mind after the defender curiously removed all information relating to Chelsea from his social media profile.
Fofana has endured a difficult time since his €80 million transfer from Leicester in 2022, making just 31 Premier League appearances in his three seasons with the club due to serious injury issues.
The 24-year-old is recovering from a long-term hamstring issue that he had surgery on in April and was on the bench for Chelsea’s Premier League opener against Crystal Palace.
Despite the return to fitness, Fofana’s decision to remove all references to Chelsea on his Instagram profile led people to question the Frenchman’s happiness at Stamford Bridge, however Maresca insisted there are no issues with the player.
“I spoke with Wes yesterday,” Maresca said. “He is very, very happy,” he added. “First of all because he is back from injury. He is joining all the sessions with us. He is very happy.
“He was on the bench against Palace. From tomorrow, he is also with us and he can also get some minutes. He is happy and we are happy. On Instagram, I don’t have any idea.”
Chelsea set to rely on Fofana despite doubts
Fofana still has four years remaining on his contract and there has been no serious speculation over his future this summer, largely due to his injury history and status.
Chelsea are hoping for Fofana to play a big role for the club this season after seeing his last season end in March after just 14 appearances, which is still more starts than he has made in his previous two campaigns with the club.
Chelsea are already sweating over their defence after seeing Levi Colwill suffer an ACL injury during pre-season, although they are not expected to sign another centre-back this summer despite Maresca’s initial suggestions that they may do so.
Fofana, meanwhile, broke his silence over his situation by simply posting on Instagram with the caption ‘focus on Friday’, indicating he was only thinking about Chelsea’s next fixture against West Ham.
