The 21-year-old was placed in Chelsea’s ‘bomb squad’ by Enzo Maresca last summer, but he failed to secure a transfer away from west London and he was forced to wait on the sidelines until completing a loan move to Dortmund in January.

Chelsea are now once again eager to offload Chukwuemeka on a permanent deal and the Englishman has set his sights on rejoining Niko Kovac’s side before the summer transfer window slams shut on 1 September.

Chukwuemeka has reportedly rejected the chance to join RB Leipzig, with Chelsea exploring the possibility of including him in a deal for Xavi Simons, and he is instead pushing to complete a move back to Dortmund.

That has been confirmed by German outlet BILD, who claim that Chukwuemeka has clearly stated his desire to rejoin the club during talks with the hierarchy at the Signal Iduna Park.

During these discussions, the 21-year-old also reportedly expressed his “disappointment” with Chelsea’s approach to players and the fact that he no longer wants to play for the club.

Chelsea’s transfer strategy explained

Enzo Maresca’s side have adopted a controversial transfer policy since the arrival of Clearlake Capital and Todd Boehly as their new owners in 2022, with the Blues spending huge sums of money to secure the signings of talented youngsters across world football.

These players then either establish themselves as first-team regulars, such as Cole Palmer, or they are quickly moved on.

As a result, Chelsea have signed a total of 53 players over the past seven transfer windows, while 33 players have been sold on permanent deals during the same time period.

This strategy has helped Chelsea build a squad of talented young players who look capable of challenging for major honours on a consistent basis over the next decade.
