Alexander Isak to Liverpool could soon draw a step closer to reality thanks to Newcastle United’s owners in a surprising transfer twist.

Newcastle have been steadfast in their insistence that Isak will not leave the club this summer, although this has wavered since the player broke ranks via the media to declare that he wants to explore transfer options.

Rumours linked the 25-year-old Sweden star to the Saudi Pro League, but Liverpool have emerged as the clear favourites to land him if he does get the green light to leave St James’ Park.

The Reds have already had a bid worth €125 million (£110m) rejected for the forward, but although there were claims that they may withdraw from the race after that, a fresh offer is expected.

This second bid could be directly fuelled by a hefty cash injection from the Saudi Public Investment Fund (PIF), which owns Newcastle.

Saudi to fund Isak transfer with Nunez move?

Liverpool need to make big-money sales before signing Isak, and that likely means offloading Darwin Nunez.

While AC Milan have become an option, The Athletic reports that Al-Hilal are putting together a strong financial package for the Uruguay international. Like Newcastle, Al-Hilal are owned by PIF.

And it appears that the Saudi Pro League side are ready to flood Liverpool with a fresh injection of funds via Nunez’s transfer.

“Liverpool are yet to receive a bid, the interest has been registered and the wheels are in motion at Al Hilal’s end,” The Athletic states.

This would represent something of a gamble from PIF. Should Nunez be sold, the Anfield club will surely seek to revisit the Isak case. If Newcastle sell the Sweden star off the back of such a transfer, there is the possibility of a backlash in the north east.

Indeed, the Mags appear to be bracing themselves for the potential loss of Isak. RB Leipzig attacker Benjamin Sesko has been targeted by the St James’ Park side, but they are also looking at other possibilities.
