Isak to Liverpool ‘sooner rather than later’ as manager confirms long-awaited move next week
Liverpool have received an exciting update on the future of Newcastle United striker Alexander Isak as the Anfield club enters into a pivotal final week of the transfer window, in which at least two blockbuster deals are on the table.
Isak has, of course, captured the headlines for several weeks as his battle with Newcastle to allow him to leave for Liverpool drags on.
The Reds have had one bid for the 25-year-old Sweden striker knocked back already, but there is a sense that they will make at least one more big effort to sign their dream No.9 before the end of Deadline Day.
Liverpool Echo correspondent Ian Doyle certainly feels that the tendency is for the Merseyside club to get this deal over the line.
He writes: “Isak looks like he will come to Anfield sooner rather than later, and there have certainly been signs of Newcastle's resolve weakening in recent days. Might a £130 million [€150m] deal sort it? It wouldn't be a shock.”
Door opened for Guehi to make Liverpool move
Liverpool are not just waiting on Isak, though. The Anfield club also have Crystal Palace centre-back Marc Guehi lined up.
Eagles manager Oliver Glasner has admitted that there is every chance the 25-year-old will be on his way in the summer.
Speaking earlier this week, he confirmed: “If Marc wants to sign a contract, then he can stay. If he doesn’t want to sign a contract, then we have to look at it.
“It’s a difficult situation. Every club like us, and particularly if you’re in Europe, the financial rules are a lot tighter than the Premier League. They’re a lot tighter.
“Everybody has to sell players to, you know, comply with the rules. So that’s a situation we’ll have to look at in the next 11 days.”
Palace are under additional pressure to sell Guehi because he is out of contract next summer and will be available to leave as a free agent. Liverpool are seeking to take advantage of this to sign him at a bargain price, and Glasner has opened the door for them to do it.
