Real Madrid summer signing Trent Alexander-Arnold is set to be dropped by Xabi Alonso after a start at the Bernabeu that has been described as a “tragedy”.

Los Blancos paid Liverpool €10 million to release the right-back early from his contract at Anfield at the beginning of June, but despite Trent impressing with his Spanish at his unveiling, he has struggled on the field.

The 26-year-old has played seven matches for his new club but his performance levels have been slammed in six of these games, and now the pressure is starting to build.

Dani Carvajal, who missed much of last season due to a serious injury, has played some minutes as a substitute, and according to one expert, that will mean Trent soon being relegated to the role of second choice.

“If Carvajal returns to his full form, Trent should start preparing for the Real Madrid bench,” La Liga reporter Javi Casquero said, according to Football Espana.

‘He contributes nothing’

This feeling is shared by Real Madrid fans, who have been frustrated by what Alexander-Arnold has given the team after arriving in the summer.

“What’s going on with Trent is a tragedy, what we can expect from him every time he plays for Madrid. It’s a signing that was done with their ass; I can’t explain it. He contributes nothing. If this goes on, the starter will be Carvajal,” Coto Matamoro, a Real Madrid fan, told Sport.

Xabi Alonso has also hinted that the Spain veteran will soon be back in the fold.

“He doesn’t just contribute on the field, but also emotionally. He’s the captain, he carries a lot on his shoulders. He has a huge amount of experience here at the Bernabeu, in European competitions and in LaLiga. He knows what it takes to win, and passing that on will be fundamental. Carvajal is back,” the Real Madrid boss said.

The Bernabeu is a notoriously difficult environment for new signings to settle, and Trent is finding that out the hard way.
