Manchester United’s transfer window in recent weeks has been dominated by the case of Bryan Mbeumo, which continues to make the headlines.

United fighting increasing odds to get Mbeumo done

Liverpool are poised to derail Man Utd’s chase for Mbeumo in a roundabout manner. The Reds’ have launched a bid worth €100 million for Eintracht Frankfurt attacker Hugo Ekitike – a player United also followed. In turn, this has persuaded Newcastle United to move for Brentford’s Yoane Wissa instead.

The Bees do not want both Wissa and Mbeumo to leave in the same transfer window and are even willing to accept a far smaller price for the Newcastle target.

With Man Utd’s talks for the Cameroon attacker at a standstill, the Magpies are set to accelerate their move, according to Sky Sports.

Newcastle are poised to spend around €45m securing Wissa, while the Red Devils have been stuck trying to talk Brentford down from their price of €81m (£70m) for Mbeumo.

Should Eddie Howe’s side get the deal done, Sky Sports has cast real doubt on United’s ability to complete their long-awaited signing. It states: “The departure of Wissa would make it incredibly difficult for Brentford to sell Bryan Mbeumo as well.

“It is seen by the club as too significant a loss of attacking talent and goals after already losing their head coach Thomas Frank and captain, Christian Norgaard, this summer.”

United are still fighting to get a deal for Mbeumo, with The Athletic reporting that they have returned with a new bid worth over €80m (€75m upfront and €5.8m in bonuses).

Emi Martinez deal back on?

Rumours linking Man Utd with a renewed bid for Aston Villa goalkeeper Emi Martinez surfaced again. Clarin reported that the former Arsenal keeper had a release clause worth little over €20m that the Red Devils could trigger.

Hope that the World Cup winner would move to Old Trafford was, however, short-lived.

Fabrizio Romano reports on YouTube that there are no negotiations and United are doing everything they can to get a deal for Mbeumo over the line.

New interest in Rashford

In a positive development for Man Utd, Sky Italia reports that Juventus have taken interest in Marcus Rashford.

One of a number of players exiled from Ruben Amorim’s squad, Rashford has been out of favour since December.

With a move to Barcelona looking difficult due to the Catalans’ financial position, interest from the Serie A side will be welcomed.

Rashford’s behaviour, meanwhile, does not merit him winning such a lucrative transfer, according to one Man Utd legend.

If you go from Manchester United to Barcelona, that's a step up that he hasn't deserved.
- Teddy Sheringham

Teddy Sheringham said: "If you assess where Marcus Rashford is at as a professional footballer, you strive as a youngster to get to the very top and play for clubs like Manchester United, and when you're there, you appreciate it.

"You don't throw it away and say you want to leave, I find the whole episode very soul-destroying, compared to the way I was back in the day and how I strove to get the privilege to play for such a huge football club.

"To hear someone talking the way he is talking, saying he wants out - I didn't like Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang doing that at Arsenal, I thought it was soul-destroying, and I hope Rashford doesn't get the move that he's hankering for. From my perspective, if you go from Manchester United to Barcelona, that's a step up that he hasn't deserved."
