Manchester United head coach Ruben Amorim may have one big transfer surprise in store at Old Trafford this summer.

The Red Devils boss has seen Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo arrive in his first-team squad, while there is also the prospect of adding Benjamin Sesko to their ranks in the days ahead.

Much of the focus in recent days at Man Utd has been on who will leave the club. Amorim has been adamant that players will only depart if suitable bids arrive, with Jadon Sancho, Alejandro Garnacho, Antony and Tyrell Malacia among those expected to leave.

Early in the summer, it was suggested that Luke Shaw would also be a member of this ‘Bomb Squad’. Rumours suggested a bid from the Saudi Pro League could take him away from Old Trafford.

Amorim, though, has shown an appreciation for the England left-back that suggests there has been a change of heart.

“Luke Shaw is a world-class player,” he said. “That is my feeling. You can feel it in the small things; when he touches the ball, the ability to play one against one.

“England had two finals. He had issues during the season, but in the final he is always there. That means something.

“But he needs to be fit. He needs to train at the limit, which is what he is doing at the moment.

“He is a great player and I am really pleased with him.”

Shaw faces injury issues and fresh competition

Amorim has hinted at why United are considering selling the 30-year-old Shaw, though. The Portuguese mentioned the left-back’s fitness problems, which have devastated his career.

Shaw has started only one game in over a year – and that was not even for United. He played the full 90 minutes for England in the final of Euro 2024 by Spain.

Amid these problems, Amorim prioritised the signing of Patrick Dorgu from Lecce in January – Man Utd’s only January transfer – in a move that seemed to end Shaw’s career at Old Trafford.

With a lack of senior cover at left-back should Malacia leave, he may just defy expectations by securing his place in the Red Devils’ plans for the season ahead – but only if he can stay fit.
