Atalanta are keen to re-sign Manchester United forward Rasmus Hojlund after cashing in on Mateo Retegui, according to a report.

The Serie A side just pulled off one of the most eye-catching deals of the summer so far, selling star striker Mateo Retegui for a whopping €68.3 million to ambitious Saudi side Al-Qadsiah.

Retegui, who was fielding Premier League interest over the course of the previous season, has become the most expensive Italian and the second-most-expensive Atalanta sale.

Top spot is occupied by Rasmus Hojlund, who was sold to Man Utd for €77.8m in the summer of 2023, and the Bergamo side are now looking to replace the Azzurri star with the Dane.

At least that is according to Foot Mercato, which reports that Atalanta are keeping tabs on Hojlund's situation at Man Utd as they look for a successor to Retegui. With Ademola Lookman also on the way out, they need to bring in a big hitter and feel that Hojlund is the man for the job.

Hojlund 'wants to leave' Man Utd

Contrary to reports elsewhere, the French outlet claims that Hojlund is 'more than ever' looking for a way out of Man Utd. The 22-year-old knows that the Red Devils want to sign a big-name striker this summer and is worried about his game time next season.

Due to his previous exploits with Atalanta, Hojlund is still held in high regard in Italy. A host of Serie A sides have been linked with him in recent months, including Inter, Napoli and Juventus.

The above-mentioned report now adds Atalanta and Lazio to his long list of suitors but also acknowledges that a permanent return to Italy is currently looking financially challenging.

Even Atalanta are concerned about Hojlund's cost, despite their handsome Retegui windfall. His wage, in particular, is said to be a stumbling block, so there is talk of a potential loan that would see Man Utd cover a chunk of his salary.

Whether the Old Trafford club would be up for this remains to be seen, but it is no secret that they would prefer an outright sale. They need to cash in on players, and Hojlund's departure would go a long way towards allowing them to sign a top-class No.9.
