Isak or Ekitike? Fabrizio Romano confirms update on Liverpool's No.9 hunt
Liverpool have reportedly stepped up their pursuit of Eintracht Frankfurt star Hugo Ekitike as they look to bring a new striker to the club this summer.
Ekitike scored 22 goals in 48 appearances across all competitions last season and his form for Eintracht Frankfurt has led to significant transfer interest from multiple Premier League clubs.
Arsenal, Chelsea and Manchester United have all been linked with the France U21 international in recent months, although Liverpool and Newcastle United are now considered to be the two frontrunners for his signature.
The latter have submitted several offers in a bid to win the race for Ekitike’s signature, while Liverpool are eager to finalise a deal if they are unable to land Alexander Isak.
The Sweden star is Arne Slot’s dream centre forward target, and Liverpool recently made a formal approach to Newcastle as they look to lodge a club-record bid for his services.
However, Eddie Howe’s side are reluctant to sell and Liverpool will be forced to turn their attention to Ekitike if it becomes clear that a deal for Isak is unlikely.
Liverpool step up Hugo Ekitike chase
Liverpool have essentially told Newcastle that they will look to sign Ekitike this summer if the Magpies refuse to sell Isak, with Slot determined to purchase a new striker to replace Darwin Nunez.
While Isak remains the Reds’ top target, Fabrizio Romano has now confirmed that Liverpool have stepped up their pursuit of Ekitike’s signature.
The transfer expert posted on X: “Understand Liverpool are advancing today in club to club talks with Eintracht for Hugo Ekitike.
“While Isak deal depends on final decision by Newcastle as they insist on not-for-sale stance. Liverpool also progressing on both club and player side for Ekitike.”
Ekitike has four years remaining on his current Eintracht Frankfurt contract, while his Estimated Transfer Value (ETV) stands at €71.1 million.
