Fabrizio Romano has revealed that Manchester United have made contact towards a move for Benjamin Sesko in the hopes of beating Newcastle to the RB Leipzig star’s signature.

Sesko is set to leave Leipzig this summer and Newcastle have emerged as the frontrunners for his signature, with Eddie Howe’s side considering the 22-year-old as a potential replacement for Alexander Isak if the Swedish international is sold in the coming weeks.

Newcastle have been engaged with both Leipzig and Sesko’s representatives over a deal in recent days, although they are yet to have agreed terms with either the player or club despite indicating that they are willing to meet the financial demands of both.

Romano elaborated over what could be an ‘important week’ for Sesko’s future after Newcastle presented their project to the Slovenian in the hopes of striking an agreement on personal terms, with Man Utd now making their move.

“Newcastle are ready to make something big,” Romano said. “But Manchester United on Monday morning made new contacts with Benjamin Sesko’s camp to start conversations about eventual numbers, the contract, the vision. So Manchester United are starting to move.

“Newcastle have already presented their project and are prepared to match the financial request. But Manchester United have started the concrete conversation to be informed of the situation after discussing is name internally for weeks.”

Sesko set to decide on Premier League move

While Newcastle are still believed to be ahead in the race for Sesko due to their progress in talks and their ability to meet the financial demands, much will depend on the player’s decision and preference.

Romano has claimed that Sesko has a ‘gentleman’s agreement’ with Leipzig to lower their asking price to around €70m plus add-ons if he deems the club to be a ‘special’ option.

United will perhaps be unable to pursue a deal until they have made a significant sale, with talks ongoing to cash in on the likes of Antony and Jadon Sancho, while Newcastle too may only look towards accelerating a move if they decide to sell Isak.

The Magpies have insisted that Isak is not for sale but they are braced for a record-breaking offer from Liverpool this week after the 25-year-old asked to leave Newcastle and was left out of the club’s pre-season tour of Asia.
