Chelsea transfer priority CONFIRMED as Jose Mourinho plays key role
Chelsea have now firmly turned their attention to sanctioning player sales following the recent acquisitions of Borussia Dortmund winger Jamie Gittens and Brighton & Hove Albion forward Joao Pedro.
The Blues have spent a combined €243.8 million on seven new signings so far during the 2025 summer transfer window, while they have only earned €22.2m through the departures of Bashir Humphreys, Kepa Arrizabalaga and Marcus Bettinelli.
Enzo Maresca’s side must have a positive transfer balance in order to register their summer signings for next season’s Champions League, after breaching UEFA’s financial rules, and their priority is now to sell the lengthy list of unwanted stars who remain at the club.
That is according to The Athletic, who report that Chelsea “intend to make a lot of sales before the window shuts.”
As many as 16 first-team stars could be offloaded by the west London club this summer, with the club potentially set to earn over €400m as a result.
This money may be reinvested into Maresca’s squad, however Chelsea are currently focused on outgoings and they aren’t expected to finalise any new arrivals for the time being.
If Chelsea decide to dip back into the market before the end of the summer window, they are likely to prioritise a new forward and a new left-sided defender, with Noni Madueke potentially set to join Arsenal and a back-up left-back desperately needed if both Ben Chilwell and Renato Veiga depart as expected.
Chelsea target summer sales
Speaking after Chelsea’s 2-1 win over Palmeiras in the Club World Cup quarter-finals, Maresca issued a blunt response when asked about potential outgoings.
“My message to the players and to the club is that I want just players that are happy to be with us,” the Chelsea boss told reporters. “The ones that are not happy, they are free to go.”
The aforementioned Madueke is one player who has been heavily linked with a Chelsea departure in recent weeks, and reports speculate that he has already agreed personal terms with Arsenal, despite the fact he would likely play a back-up role to Bukayo Saka in north London.
In fact, the transfer could be completed soon, with Arsenal in need of a new winger following news that Fenerbahce are chasing a summer deal for Leandro Trossard.
Jose Mourinho’s side are aiming to win the Super Lig title for the first time since 2014 and they have identified Trossard as a key target, according to The Turkish Post.
This could force Arsenal to intensify their pursuit of Madueke, which would help Chelsea ease their financial concerns and significantly improve their chances of registering their new signings for the Champions League next term.
