Chelsea defender Renato Veiga has agreed personal terms with Atletico Madrid, according to Fabrizio Romano.

The Portugal international is set to leave the Blues after just one season, having joined from Swiss giants Basel for a trifling €14 million last summer in a low-risk, high-reward deal.

Veiga looked fairly reliable when he featured for Chelsea in the early parts of last season, but the versatile defender wasn't happy with his role in the team under Enzo Maresca.

Keen to be a star for Portugal at the 2026 World Cup, Veiga wanted to be a regular starter at centre-back rather than a bit-part left-back and thus left the Blues to join Juventus on loan in January.

Now back at Stamford Bridge, the 21-year-old is again seeking a move away, and Chelsea are looking to offload him on a permanent basis - and for a significant profit.

Veiga agrees Atletico terms

According to Fabrizio Romano, Veiga has now agreed personal terms with LaLiga giants Atletico Madrid ahead of a potential move to the Spanish capital.

The Rojiblancos were recently named among the clubs with an interest in the Portuguese, along with Bayern Munich. Romano reiterates that Chelsea are demanding a sizeable €40 million for Veiga.

The Blues and Atletico Madrid remain in talks to thrash out a deal, with Veiga keen to link up with Diego Simeone and former Chelsea midfielder Conor Gallagher.

Selling Veiga for €40m would yield a handsome profit of €26m, which would be another illustration of the fact that Chelsea's heavily ridiculed transfer model is actually having the intended effect.

Veiga, a young player with a lot of potential, was signed to give the Blues a significant return on investment, either by generating a massive profit or by becoming a key contributor to Maresca's side. He is now set to provide the former.
