The Blues are on the verge of securing the signing of Jorrel Hato from Ajax, with the Netherlands international having already agrees personal terms and handed in a transfer request.

The two clubs are now discussing a fee and are expected to come to an agreement despite a small discrepancy in valuation. Chelsea reportedly want to pay €40 million for the 19-year-old, while Ajax want at least €50m.

Despite the impending arrival of Hato - and the ongoing talks over €70m-rated Xavi Simons - reports in Italy are claiming that Chelsea could make yet another big-money defensive signing this summer.

According to Tuttomercatoweb, the Blues have taken a liking to top Newcastle target Giorgio Scalvini of Atalanta and are even said to be readying a bid for the Italian defender.

Chelsea prepare Scalvini bid

Scalvini is regarded as one of Europe's best up-and-coming centre-backs, but several serious injuries have halted his momentum and development over the past year.

Prior to his ACL tear in 2024, transfer speculation surrounding Scalvini was rampant, with pretty much every elite club associated with him. However, the rumour mill has pretty much moved on from the 21-year-old since.

This summer, Newcastle have been his most prominent suitors, but even this link has died down somewhat in recent weeks. This is partly due to the heavy focus on the future of Alexander Isak and the Magpies' attempts to sign a replacement, but also due to Atalanta's transfer stance.

The Bergamo side do not want to move Scalvini on as they have already sold Mateo Retegui to Al-Qadsiah and are expected to lose Ademola Lookman to Inter. It is therefore claimed that it would require at least €60m for Atalanta to consider cashing in on the defender.

Chelsea are said to be keen to do a deal quickly for the youngster, but it is unclear how much they are willing to offer for him. Either way, this is bad news for Newcastle, who have already missed out on a host of targets to bigger clubs in what has been a disastrous summer for them so far.
