Arsenal finalise Gyokeres transfer: Striker handed ICONIC kit number - Ornstein
Arsenal have finally received the green light from Sporting CP to complete the signing of Viktor Gyokeres, according to David Ornstein.
One of the biggest transfer sagas of the summer has come to an end. Viktor Gyokeres will be a new Arsenal player, pending a successful medical. Reports of an agreement between the Gunners and Sporting have been doing the rounds in recent days, and they have now been confirmed.
David Ornstein of The Athletic reports that a 'total agreement' has been reached between Arsenal and Sporting CP and that the Lisbon giants have finally permitted Gyokeres to travel to London.
Gyokeres will undergo his medical on Saturday and then link up with Arsenal on their pre-season tour of Asia. He is expected to be accompanied by Gunners sporting director Andrea Berta on his flight.
Arsenal have agreed a €63.5 million fee with Sporting, with a potential further €10m heading to Portugal in add-ons. The basic structure of the deal was already settled on earlier this week, but the final details pertaining to his bonuses have now been ironed out.
As revealed on The Transfer Podcast, Sporting wanted his add-ons to be so easily reachable as to be almost guaranteed, which Arsenal weren't happy with. A restructured proposal was submitted earlier this week, with the bonuses now genuinely performance-related.
Arsenal sign Gyokeres
Gyokeres will be handed Arsenal's iconic No.14 shirt, which was previously worn by club legend Thierry Henry. The Sweden international is Arsenal's marquee signing of the summer, with the North London club crying out for a reliable No.9 for years.
The 27-year-old had scored prolifically in Portugal, but his exit from Sporting has been acrimonious, to put it lightly. Gyokeres accused the Portuguese champions of reneging on an agreement to let him leave for €70m.
Sporting vehemently disputed that such a pact ever existed and dug their heels in during the talks with Arsenal, prompting Gyokeres to explore legal avenues to resolve the situation.
In the meantime, the striker remained absent from pre-season training, which Sporting considered a breach of contract. However, the crisis has now finally been completely resolved, with Gyokeres' agent even waiving his commission to help finalise the deal.
