OFFICIAL: Arsenal complete Christian Norgaard transfer
Arsenal have confirmed the signing of Brentford midfielder Christian Norgaard for a transfer fee of €11.7 million.
The length of Norgaard's contract at the Emirates Stadium hasn't been confirmed by the club yet, but he will bolster the midfield options available to Mikel Arteta next season.
FootballTransfers understands that Tottenham Hotspur were also interested in signing Norgaard this summer, following the appointment of ex-Brentford boss Thomas Frank as their new head coach, however Arsenal acted quickly to secure his signature amid competition from their north London rivals.
Norgaard is expected to play a back-up role to Martin Zubimendi next campaign, with Arsenal completing the signings of two new midfielders following Jorginho’s move to Flamengo and Thomas Partey's exit on a Bosman deal.
The Denmark international made 196 first-team appearances for Brentford across a six-year spell with the Bees, following his arrival from Fiorentina for €3.5m in 2019.
Norgaard signed a new two-year contract extension at Brentford in March, however he has now left the club ahead of the 2025-26 campaign and he will wear the number 16 shirt at Arsenal.
Upon confirmation of Norgaard's move to north London, Mikel Arteta said: "We’re delighted to welcome Christian to Arsenal. He is an international player with a wealth of experience of the Premier League. He has proven leadership skills and a strong character which will be invaluable to our squad.
"He is a strong midfielder with excellent tactical awareness and versatility. He also has physical presence and intelligence which will give us added depth and balance. Christian will bring a lot to the group both on and off the pitch, and we’re excited to start working with him in this next chapter of his career. We welcome Christian and his family to Arsenal."
Arsenal sign Christian Norgaard
Norgaard has been a reliable performer in the Premier League since Brentford’s promotion in 2021, and he enjoyed his best season in the English top flight last year - scoring five goals and providing four assists in 34 appearances.
The Denmark star, who has 35 senior international caps, is expected to compete with Zubimendi for a starting berth at the base of Arsenal’s midfield, although he is likely to play a back-up role to the Spaniard.
Norgaard’s arrival could ease the pressure on Declan Rice, however, with the Englishman racking up the second-most minutes of any outfield Arsenal player last season - behind William Saliba.
