The 26-year-old’s contract was due to expire next summer but BBC Sport state that Tomiyasu and Arsenal have reached a contractual settlement to end his time at the club with the Japanese international facing a further five months on the sidelines.

Tomiyasu is still recovering from surgery on his knee in February and played just six minutes of football last season, having also had a similar operation in 2023 which led to him being injured to start the campaign.

Arsenal signed Tomiyasu for €18.6 million in 2021 and the defender proved to be a reliable squad member who consistently performed all across the backline in his first three seasons with the club, making 79 appearances in total.

The Gunners are now expected to step up their chase for a replacement, with FootballTransfers being told that a second bid is being prepared for Valencia youngster Cristhian Mosquera.

Mikel Arteta is keen to add depth to his backline after seeing Kieran Tierney return to Celtic, while left-back Oleksandr Zinchenko could also leave the Emirates this summer.

What injuries has Tomiyasu had at Arsenal?

The news comes in light of Arteta adding former Gabriel Heinze to his coaching staff, with the former Manchester United star having built a reputation as an aggressive, tough defender during his playing career.

Arsenal will be disappointed to lose Tomiyasu after seeing the ex-Bologna star become a fan favourite and cult hero despite his continued setbacks with injuries over the past two seasons.

Tomiyasu’s first major injury for the Gunners saw him miss two months of his first season with a calf problem – an issue which continued to plague him alongside his knee concerns.

Having had his first round of knee surgery in March 2023, Tomiyasu missed nearly three months of the following season with his calf problem before picking up another knee injury during Arsenal’s pre-season tour in 2024.

Tomiyasu made what turned out to be his final appearance for Arsenal on October 5 last year, with his six minute return leading to another setback that eventually required surgery in February and he is now not expected to be fit until early 2026.
