The Red Devils have made their first statement signing of what is bound to be a huge summer. After slumping to their worst-ever Premier League finish and losing the Europa League final to Tottenham, Man Utd are determined to rebuild their side.

The first fresh cog in Ruben Amorim's new-look team is Matheus Cunha. The versatile Wolves forward has finally joined the club after weeks of speculation.

A statement on the Man Utd website read: "Manchester United has reached agreement with Wolverhampton Wanderers for the signing of Matheus Cunha. The Brazilian forward’s signing is subject to visa and registration.

"The 26 year-old has 13 senior caps for Brazil, and, in his club career, has made 270 appearances and scored 72 goals in the English, Spanish, German and Swiss top flights.

"During two-and-a-half seasons at Wolves, Cunha has scored 33 goals in 92 appearances. Everyone at Manchester United looks forward to welcoming Matheus to Old Trafford."

Despite Man Utd's lack of European football, Cunha was keen on the move to Old Trafford and agreed to sign a long-term contract. The Red Devils triggered the €74 million release clause that was inserted into his Wolves contract when he extended his deal in February.

Cunha has thus become Amorim's second prominent signing after wing-back Patrick Dorgu, who joined in a €30m deal from Lecce in the January transfer window.

Man Utd sign Cunha

In Cunha, Man Utd have signed one of the Premier League's most reliable attackers. The 25-year-old has contributed to 40 league goals over the past two seasons, scoring 27 and assisting 13.

Cunha is primarily expected to play as one of the two No.10s in Amorim's side alongside captain Bruno Fernandes, although the latter reportedly has a lucrative Saudi offer on the table and could jump ship before the new campaign starts.

The Brazilian can also feature out wide and in a more advanced No.9 role, but due to his ability to operate in space, he is best suited playing off a more traditional centre-forward.

Man Utd are Cunha's sixth club since 2018, with the attacker previously suiting up for Sion in Switzerland, RB Leipzig and Hertha BSC in Germany, Atletico Madrid in Spain and, of course, Wolves.
