Man Utd in transfer battle with Man City to sign STAR goalkeeper

Manchester United could face competitions from rivals Manchester City in their pursuit of Marc-Andre ter Stegen, with both teams reportedly fighting to make the Barcelona goalkeeper their number one.
Ter Stegen is not part of Hansi Flick’s plans after Barcelona agreed to sign Espanyol’s Joan Garcia, while Wojciech Szczesny has also been offered the chance to remain as the club’s backup.
With three years remaining on his lucrative contract at Barca, Ter Stegen has insisted he has no desire to leave but he is aware that a season on the bench could significantly harm his chances of being Germany’s starting goalkeeper at next summer’s World Cup.
The situation has led to clubs such as United taking interest, with Ruben Amorim’s side considering options to replace Andre Onana after a season of poor performances.
And TEAMtalk now claim that Manchester City have joined the race for Ter Stegen as they too look for a new goalkeeper in anticipation of Ederson leaving the club this summer, while Chelsea have also been linked with a move.
Barcelona’s desire to get Ter Stegen’s wages off their books could allow United or City to negotiate a low-risk deal to get the 33-year-old game time for a nominal fee, even with his significant wages.
Ter Stegen future still unclear despite Premier League interest
Ter Stegen struggled with injuries last season, limiting him to eight La Liga appearances, most of which were littered with inconsistent displays and mistakes, leading to Barca’s determination to sign his long-term successor this summer.

While their goalkeeping situation is still undecided, with the potential for new signing Garcia to be loaned out, Ter Stegen is not considered a key part of Flick’s squad and will be allowed to leave.
Chelsea have also considered a move for the German but they would prefer to focus their attention back on Mike Maignan after the Club World Cup, giving United and City the opportunity to fight for a move.
City’s interest, however, could be contingent on Ederson’s future, with no exit being agreed as of yet, while United will only move for a goalkeeper if they have addressed other areas of their squad and still have remaining budget to accommodate another option.
