Brennan Johnson’s scrappy finish in the 42nd minute handed Spurs their first major trophy in over 17 years and secured Ange Postecoglou’s side a place in next season’s Champions League.

Man Utd, on the other hand, will be without European football entirely for the first time since the 2014-15 season, and although Amorim is reluctant to leave Old Trafford, he has admitted he would be willing to depart if the club want to appoint a new head coach.

“I have nothing to show to the fans, so in this moment it is a little bit of faith. Let’s see,” he told reporters in Bilbao.

“I am always open, if the board and fans feel I am not the right guy, I will go in the next day without any conversation about compensation, but I will not quit.

“I am really confident on my job. And as you see I will not change nothing in the way I do things.”

When asked if he believes he is the correct man to lead Man Utd’s rebuild this summer, Amorim admitted: “Yes, I’m confident that I’m the guy, more so now than at the beginning. Because I know the club, I know what it means to coach this club, I understand what this team needs. I have more tools to do my job.”

Amorim added: “In this moment I am not going to be here defending myself. It is not my style. In this moment it is a little bit of faith [needed].

“I am not going to talk about the future, tonight we need to deal with the pain of losing this match. It was clear we were the better team, then we manage not to score again. The guys try everything to win the game. In the future we can assess.

“I was always really honest with you. We were not perfect today, but we were better than the opponents. There are days when we have been really poor, but today was not the day.”

Ruben Amorim at Man Utd

Amorim has endured a tricky first few months at Old Trafford and his side are currently languishing down in 16th place in the Premier League table ahead of the final matchday on Sunday.

Despite reaching the Europa League final, Amorim’s win rate since his appointment at Man Utd stands at just 39.5%, while this decreases to a measly 23% when only including Premier League matches.
