Bayern Munich's signing of Eric Dier could open the door for Manchester United to sign Matthijs De Ligt.

De Ligt is reportedly one of Erik ten Hag's top transfer targets, having previously worked with him at Ajax.

United are in desperate need of a central defender due to a number of injuries this season.

Lisandro Martinez, Raphael Varane, Victor Lindelof and Harry Maguire have all spent time on the sidelines.

As a result, the likes of left-back Luke Shaw and 36-year-old Jonny Evans have had to step in for Ten Hag's side.

De Ligt would not only be one of the first names on the Dutch coach's team sheet, but he would immediately strengthen the team too.

And, having only started five Bundesliga games under Thomas Tuchel this season, as well as Dier's recent arrival, he could become available this month.

Why Bayern signed Dier

While Dier’s switch to Bayern has taken many Premier League fans by surprise, the reasoning behind the move is clear.

The Bundesliga giants have been short of cover in the centre back position all season, often deploying makeshift players there.

Dier may be lacking both match time and form, but he brings with him a wealth of experience at the top level, having played in the Champions League with Tottenham and featured on 49 occasions for England.

He also has experience playing abroad, having gone through the academy at Sporting CP.
