Antony scored his first goal of the season to seal Manchester United’s place in the FA Cup fifth round as Erik ten Hag’s side stumbled to a 4-2 win over Newport County.

The Red Devils sailed into a 2-0 lead during the first-half and looked to be cruising towards an easy cup win after two weeks without a game.

However, an Alejandro Garnacho missed chance in the first-half provided Newport with a newfound belief and Bryn Morris’ wonderstrike in the 36th minute lifted the home crowd’s spirits.

Graham Couglan’s side then found an equaliser just two minutes into the second-half and looked the better side before Antony netted his first goal of the 2023-24 campaign.

A right-footed Luke Shaw shot struck the post and Antony was on hand to tap the ball home into an empty net in the 68th minute.

The Brazilian also provided his first assist of the season during the game. He exchanged a wonderful one-two with Bruno Fernandes before the Portugal international opened the scoring with a neat finish into the bottom corner.

Kobbie Mainoo also netted his first Man Utd goal, while Rasmus Hojlund wrapped up the scoring with a stoppage time strike to end Newport’s hopes of sealing a replay.

Antony’s first goal contributions of the new season came during his 23rd appearance of the 2023-24 campaign; his last goal for Man Utd before netting against Newport came on 16 April 2023 versus Nottingham Forest.

The 23-year-old joined the Red Devils for €95 million in 2022 and he registered 11 goals and assists during his debut campaign at Old Trafford.

Man Utd will face Bristol City or Nottingham Forest in the fifth round of the FA Cup.
