Martial facing uncertain future as Man Utd make contract decisions

Manchester United are still uncertain over the future of Anthony Martial, with the striker’s contract set to expire this summer and the club considering whether to take up their option to extend.

Martial has endured a turbulent time at Old Trafford since becoming the most expensive teenager ever in 2015 when he joined United from Monaco for up to £57.6 million.

Injuries and inconsistent form have prevented Martial from ever reaching the potential expected of him, with the 27-year-old scoring just 11 Premier League goals in his last 57 appearances across more than three seasons.

ESPN state that United were willing to let Martial leave this summer but they only received interest from Saudi Arabia, with the Frenchman rejecting the chance to hold talks over a move to the Pro League.

United always insert 12-month options in their contracts in order to potentially protect any sell-on value for a player but the situation is complicated due to Martial being one of the highest earners at the club yet performing poorly and finding himself behind summer signing Rasmus Hojlund in the pecking order.

Consequently, Martial’s future will be assessed as the season goes on, with a decision likely to be based on his performances across the campaign, meaning the forward would be free to sign pre-contracts with other clubs in January if his option isn’t triggered.

United to extend contracts of defensive duo

While United are yet to make a call on Martial’s future, the club will look to take up the options in the contracts of Victor Lindelof and Aaron Wan-Bissaka.

Both players also have their deals up at the end of the season but United are set to extend them until 2025 and also look to open talks over long-term extensions for Wan-Bissaka.

The 25-year-old looked to have no future at Old Trafford following Erik ten Hag’s appointment last summer but, despite rarely playing in the Dutchman’s first few months in charge, he forced himself back into the first team over the course of the season.

Lindelof, meanwhile, has proven a loyal servant since his move from Benfica in 2017, featuring in a number of positions and making nearly 250 appearances in all competitions.
