Barcelona could make a surprise move for Anthony Martial as they look towards low-cost signings in January due to their precarious financial position.

The Catalan side have been ordered to significantly lower their wage bill despite making substantial cuts this summer, with fears that Vitor Roque, the €40 million wonderkid set to join in January, may not be able to be registered.

Consequently, Barca are pivoting to a more conservative transfer strategy, according to Fichajes, and the La Liga champions will focus on strengthening on affordable signings without making huge outlays.

GAME OVER?: Barca could face BANKRUPTCY

Barca’s desire to strengthen in attack has seen Martial discussed as a potential option, with the Frenchman appearing unlikely to have a long-term future at United, having been available for transfer for some time.

The 27-year-old has failed to consistently live up to his reputation since joining United for €60m in 2015 and is going into the final year of his contract at Old Trafford, although the club will likely take up their option to extend for another season in order to protect his value.

Martial is not considered Barca’s top target but he represents a ‘quality alternative’, with a loan in January described as a ‘plausible option’ if Xavi’s men cannot secure their preferred players.

What does the future hold for Martial at United?

While United would be open to a permanent departure for Martial, the Frenchman has featured regularly under Erik ten Hag this season, such is the Dutchman’s lack of options up front.

Martial was utilised as summer signing Rasmus Hojlund was sidelined with injury, while the ex-Monaco man has played more football than anticipated due to the absences of Jadon Sancho and Antony.

But Martial has netted just 11 Premier League goals in the last three seasons, also being limited to 55 appearances in that time due to injury and poor form.

United could target a forward in January if their budget permits it, which could pave the way for Martial to depart, however Ten Hag would be unlikely to let another forward leave unless a replacement can come in first.
