The takeover saga ruined any hopes Manchester United may have had of signing a superstar striker, according to Fabrizio Romano.

Over the course of the bygone campaign, Erik ten Hag made it clear that United would target a star striker in the summer, with the club in desperate need of a 'proper No.9.'

They did ultimately get one - the inexperienced Rasmus Hojlund from Atalanta for a whopping €75 million. However, had it not been for the Glazers dragging their heels in the takeover saga, Man Utd could have signed a much more established, big-name forward like Victor Osimhen or Harry Kane, claims Fabrizio Romano.

“With the takeover," the Italian told CaughtOffside, "they maybe would’ve had the chance to go for superstar players, there were links with players like Harry Kane and Victor Osimhen, but it wasn’t possible with their financial situation."

The transfer expert has also given an update on the takeover process, which is still ongoing despite recent rumours that the Glazers may not sell after all.

Takeover latest

Speaking on his YouTube channel, Romano said: "The takeover - this is creating some issues in terms of the day job [for Ten Hag]...we know that in February, in March, in April, in May the feeling in the press and everywhere was that the takeover was really close and that it was just a matter of time before the summer transfer window."

"But it didn't happen and now no one from the two parties, including INEOS, including Sheikh Jassim, wants to comment about that because the situation is getting really, really slow. So, they were expecting to have progress in February, March, April and we are still at the same point."

"So, all the parties believe that things are still happening behind the scenes for the takeover at Man Utd, but they don't want to comment in public at the moment because the feeling is that with the Glazers the process is very slow and also complicated."
