Cristiano Ronaldo was right about Erik ten Hag and the state of Manchester United according to Piers Morgan, who looked to reignite controversy after the Red Devils' 3-1 loss to Brighton.

United put in an abject display on Saturday, with Danny Welbeck scoring against his former club before Pascal Gross and Joao Pedro found the target, rendering Hannibal Mejbri's late strike a consolation.

Rasmus Hojlund had earlier had a goal ruled out with Marcus Rashford unable to keep the ball in play in the build-up.

Hojlund was signed from Atalanta for €75 million in August, but it might have been Ronaldo leading the line at Old Trafford had he not fallen out with Ten Hag last year.

A blistering, unsanctioned, interview with Morgan set the course for his free transfer to Saudi Pro League side Al-Nassr, and he has since scored 21 goals in 25 games with the Knights of Najd.

And Morgan couldn't resist the temptation to revisit Ronaldo's claims that the Red Devils were in a mess, on and off the pitch.

"As woeful United are thrashed at home by Brighton, does ANYONE still doubt Cristiano was 100 per cent right about the state of the club and Ten Hag?," he posted on X (formerly Twitter). "They've got even worse since Ronaldo left."

Ten Hag ended United's trophy drought in winning the EFL Cup in February, but they find themselves 13th in the Premier League after five games played this season.

Hojlund arrived injured and is yet to get off the mark - as close as he came on Saturday - while fellow summer arrival Mason Mount only played two Premier League games before an injury of his own.

Andre Onana has thus far struggled to replace David de Gea in goal, and the pressure is beginning to mount on ten Hag, who has also publicly fallen out with Jadon Sancho.
