Manchester United have agreed to a €85 million transfer fee for Atalanta striker Rasmus Hojlund, with football transfer expert Fabrizio Romano stating that the deal will be completed imminently.

Man Utd have been chasing a permanent replacement for Cristiano Ronaldo since the Portugal legend left the club late in 2022, but the stalled takeover has posed problems for manager Erik ten Hag to land his preferred options.

United were linked with several forwards over the summer but were put off by huge asking prices for Tottenham's Harry Kane and Napoli's Victor Osimhen. Ultimately, they have settled on Hojlund.

Romano reports on Twitter: "Rasmus Hojlund to Manchester United, here we go! Agreement reached right now with Atalanta.

"Package will be around €70m with add-ons, clubs preparing documents in the next 24 hours.

"Hojlund agreed a five-year deal 10 days ago as he only wanted Manchester United."

Man Utd have beaten PSG to sign the 20-year-old Denmark international, although the exact fee is presently uncertain, with The Athletic reporting that the Red Devils will pay €75m upfront plus potentially €10m in bonuses.

Assuming this latter figure is correct, Hojlund will become the most expensive striker in Manchester United history, surpassing the €84.7m fee the Red Devils paid Everton to sign Romelu Lukaku in 2017.

Man Utd's Hojlund gamble

The deal marks an enormous step up for Hojlund, who only signed for Atalanta for €17.2m in 2022 and has an Estimated Transfer Value (ETV) of €24.4m.

Although this figure will rise thanks to playing with Man Utd, it still appears that the Red Devils are paying significantly over the odds for a player who has massive potential but has only 27 goals in senior football.
