Fabrizio Romano has announced that Manchester United midfielder Fred “will leave” Old Trafford this summer – and the football transfer news specialist has dropped a likely destination for the Brazil star.

Fred joined Man Utd in 2018 from Shakhtar Donetsk in a deal worth €60 million but has struggled throughout his time in England to hold down a regular starting spot, despite the princely fee that was paid for him.

He presently has just a year left on his contract, meaning that Erik ten Hag’s side risk losing him for free if he does not sign a new contract with the club this summer or is not sold.

Given that Ten Hag wishes to raise money to complete more transfer deals – specifically one that will bring Atalanta striker Rasmus Hojlund to the club – Fred is a natural player to be sold. This is especially the case as one of Man Utd’s two summer signings is Mason Mount, a player likely to occupy the same area of the field as the 30-year-old.

According to Romano, Galatasaray are still pushing to sign the South American.

“Galatasaray remain keen on signing Fred as priority target, as revealed two weeks ago,” Romano tweeted. “Fred will leave Man Utd this summer.”

Premier League rivals Fulham were linked to him earlier this summer, but those links have passed.

How much is Fred worth?

Manchester United are seeking €23 million (£20m) for Fred, according to various sources a month ago. This figure is only likely to drop as the transfer window progresses and the club get more desperate to make a sale.

Fred’s Estimated Transfer Value (ETV) is presently €17m, down from a peak of €37m little over a year ago. Indeed, Fred was worth €19m in June, but his worth is starting to drop as he enters the last year of his Man Utd contract – a fact that will not be lost on Galatasaray and any other suitors he may still have.
