De Gea was not included on Man Utd's retained list, but the official announcement claimed that "discussions remain open” on a new contract at Old Trafford.

However, these latest reports indicate that a deal with not be reached, meaning the Spain international will be allowed to leave on a free transfer this summer.

De Gea has been at Man Utd for 12 years, playing 545 times for the club, including over 400 times in the Premier League.

During that time, he lifted the Premier League, the Europa League, and both domestic cups.

De Gea's Man Utd replacement

United had been in the hunt for a new goalkeeper, even if De Gea had extended his stay at Old Trafford, but these latest developments make that search even more important.

Erik ten Hag's side have been linked with a variety of shot stoppers from across Europe, varying in age from 23-year-old Porto goalkeeper Diogo Costa to veteran Bayern Munich keeper Yann Sommer, who will turn 35 later this year.

Also rumoured to be on the shortlist are Inter Milan's Andre Onana, Aston Villa's Emiliano Martinez, Everton's Jordan Pickford and Valencia's Giorgi Marmardashvili.
