Former Arsenal midfielder Matteo Guendouzi could play a key role in their transfer business this summer, despite leaving the club last year.

The 24-year-old was a divisive figure during his time in the Premier League and fell out of favour under Mikel Arteta after an altercation with Brighton forward, and fellow Frenchman, Neal Maupay in June 2020.

Arteta decided to exclude Guendouzi from training and the player was subsequently sent on loan to both Hertha Berlin and Marseille, before joining the latter on a permanent deal in 2022.

The Frenchman has excelled back in his homeland and helped Marseille back into the Champions League during his first season at the club.

However, he could be set to return to English shores this summer amid interest from West Ham United. The Hammers reportedly see Guendouzi as a possible Declan Rice replacement, according to The Athletic.

The midfielder has two years left on his current deal at Marseille, but West Ham feel he could be a perfect fit alongside Lucas Paqueta in their midfield.

Why Guendouzi could play a role in Arsenal's summer activity

Arsenal are currently the frontrunners to sign West Ham star Rice during the upcoming transfer window, with Chelsea and Manchester United reportedly behind the Gunners in the pecking order.

Rice is seen as Arsenal's dream summer target, according to reports, and would provide depth and competition in the middle of the park.

With Guendouzi potentially on his way to East London, it could clear the way for Arsenal to sign Rice and ensure Arteta gets his man.
