Manchester City goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma is ready to commit his future to the club should they be demoted from the Premier League, his agent has promised.

City find themselves in a period of turbulence after being found guilty of 114 of the 115 charges levelled against them by the Premier League. While the club intends to challenge the decision, the threat of demotion hangs over them, with those in the Premier League potentially seeking to “destroy” the club.

Naturally, this has led to speculation over what might happen to some of the club’s star players if forced to play in the Championship – or even further down the Football League pecking order.

One of the first players to break their silence on the matter has been Donnarumma, whose future has been discussed via his agent, Enzo Raiola.

Speaking with Radio Napoli Centrale, Raiola pledged that the goalkeeper has no immediate intention of leaving the club, regardless of relegation.

“Will the chaos at Manchester City change anything? No, it won’t change anything for us or for Gigio,” he said.

“Information circulates from time to time. The club has spoken with Gigio, everyone is calm.

“There are important matches against Liverpool and PSG now, and then the sporting legal process will take its course.

“But Gigio has received assurances from Manchester City.”

Why Donnarumma may be forced out – whether he likes it or not

Regardless of the wishes of the players, City are likely to be forced to sell many of their stars should the worst come to the worst and they are relegated.

Nick Harris explained why on the Transfers Podcast powered by FootballTransfers:

“It might not even get resolved this season, but let’s say it does happen. They end up in the Championship in the near future. Then it gets quite interesting because which players want to stay with Manchester City as a Championship club?

“Quite a lot probably won’t. Anyone who thinks that many are there because they love Manchester needs to give their head a wobble.

“Manchester City can't afford to keep the vast majority of their squad if they went to the Championship. They've got a £400m-a-year wage bill at the moment, maybe slightly higher.

“You go into the championship with that wage bill, you immediately fall massively foul of Football League PSR and FFP rules. So they’re going to have to get rid of most of their players to even meet wage requirements.”

Donnarumma, who is under contract until 2030 at the Etihad Stadium, may therefore find his future out of his hands if City are relegated – but he certainly wouldn’t be the only player to depart.
