Liverpool are eyeing up a move for Aston Villa midfielder Douglas Luiz, and feel they have some leverage in the hope of getting any potential deal done for the player.

The Reds are in need of a new midfielder having suffered through an injury crisis that has seen them lose the likes of Thiago and Naby Keita in recent weeks, depleting their squad.

They’ve brough in Arthur Melo on loan from Juventus on the final day of the transfer window, but it may not be enough given that there are gaps in their squad.

As a result, they’re planning for the long run and are eyeing up names they could sign in the coming months to bolster their team significantly.

Liverpool to offer Aston Villa a swap deal

The Reds feel they can offer Aston Villa Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain in any potential deal and that it would be welcomed by the Villains.

Villa boss Steven Gerrard was adamant on keeping Luiz in the summer transfer window, even rejecting a trio of bids from Arsenal on the final day of the window.

Even though he is in the final year of his contract, Gerrard was keen to keep hold of the player and refused a big fee from the Gunners, with the hope of keeping his own team intact for the rest of the season.

They may be tempted by the offer of Oxlade-Chamberlain amidst all their problems this season, though, and the player himself has admitted Gerrard is his idol, which may interest him in making the move.

Oxlade-Chamberlain’s Liverpool career hasn’t quite gone to plan, having been blighted by injury issues in recent times, which limited him to just 17 Premier League appearances last season.

The Englishman is well down the pecking order at Anfield and could leave the club very soon, with opportunities continuing to be limited for the player.
