Liverpool star Trent-Alexander Arnold has been priced at £7.5 million for the 2022-23 Fantasy Premier League season, which means he remains the most expensive defender in the game.

The Englishman managed to score 208 points last season, which saw him top the standings for defenders and also ensured he finished third in the entire game, behind only club team-mate Mohamed Salah and Heung-Min Son.

Alexander-Arnold is £0.5m more expensive than both Joao Cancelo and fellow Liverpool full-back Andrew Robertson. Cancelo also managed to score over 200 points last season, while Robertson ranked third for points from defenders with 186.

Alexander-Arnold registered 12 assists last season, while Robertson notched up 10. Of all defenders last year, the Englishman also scored the most bonus points with 32, while Cancelo scored 27.

Virgil van Dijk ensured there’s three Liverpool defenders in the top four most expensive defenders for the 2022-23 FPL edition, with the Dutchman priced at £6.5m. He scored 183 points last season, which was the fourth most of any defender and the ninth most of any player.

He also managed the most clean sheets of all defenders with 21, but he only scored 13 bonus points, which was the same as Brentford’s Pontus Jansson.

There are five defenders who are marginally cheaper than the former Southampton man, with Reece James, Ben Chilwell, Ruben Dias, Joel Matip and Aymeric Laporte all priced at £6m.

Of those five players, Matip led the standings last season with 170 points, while Laporte was narrowly behind him with 160 points. However, James and Chilwell were valuable assets when they were fit to play, but were both hit with injury problems which limited the points they could score. James also registered the third-most bonus points with 26. He scored five goals, the joint-most of any defender alongside Arsenal’s Gabriel, and grabbed the fourth-most assists with nine.

Chelsea also have two drivers priced at £5.5m, Thiago Silva and Marcos Alonso. That duo are tied with Tottenham’s new signing Ivan Perisic, who has been classed as a defender, and Manchester City’s John Stones for 10th place in the most expensive defender standings.

Perisic scored eight goals and assisted a further seven in Serie A last season, and will be a popular pick given he will likely play as Antonio Conte’s first choice left-wing-back.
