Everybody has become familiar with Leeds United’s unique style of play, which is born out of manager Marcelo Bielsa’s attacking philosophy. The Yorkshire club have split opinion at times, but they have never really been in relegation trouble despite only gaining promotion from the Championship last season, and they have seen some exciting forward-thinking talent shine at Elland Road.
Nobody has been brighter than Raphinha Belloli, the Brazilian winger who has proved a key difference maker for Leeds this season. With five goals and five assists in 23 Premier League matches this season, he certainly has impressed; as is natural, he has also caught the attention of a number of big clubs who will likely be testing Leeds’ resolve in the summer.
What position does Raphinha play?
Raphinha usually operates off the left for Leeds, but in an attacking position, which usually requires him to press high rather than track back. He is versatile enough to swap wings, too.
He is known for drifting inside and making himself difficult to mark for fullbacks and centre backs alike, but he can hug the touchline and take players on with particularly good dribbling and close control.
“He’s an additional alternative to the right-wing position, left-wing position and eventually to the central, offensive midfield position,” Bielsa said of him earlier this season.
“Fundamentally, he’s a winger who can play on the right or left-hand side.”

Quite simply, Raphinha is Leeds’ difference maker. It was a real coup to be able to bring him in last summer. The Brazilian has added star dust to the squad, ensuring Leeds’ acclimatisation back in the Premier League has been fairly seamless.
The bad news for Leeds is that he is almost certainly destined for bigger things. While they are on an upward trajectory under Bielsa, there is a genuine possibility that he could play in the Champions League some day.

Liverpool’s need to revamp their attack has seen their name tossed in the ring for Raphinha most prominently, and he would add more pace, dynamism and a younger face to what has become a rather stale operation at Anfield. Goal have said that the Reds view the 23-year-old as an ideal player to freshen things up for Jurgen Klopp’s side.
But they may face competition for his signature from old foes Manchester United, who are still in the hunt for a wide player to compliment Marcus Rashford in attack.
