Anthony Martial lined up for France against Kazakhstan on Sunday afternoon aiming to end a truly shocking run of form for the national side.

Prior to the World Cup Group D qualifier, Martial had played 26 times for the France national team and scored only one goal.

That came during a 3-1 friendly win over Italy in Bari, way back in September 2016.

Thus, Martial had gone the best part of five years without scoring for a France squad that has reached the final of the last two major international tournaments – winning World Cup 2018 and finishing runners-up at Euro 2016.

This record will not have gone unnoticed in Manchester and among Man Utd fans, who have been heavily critical of Martial this season.

The 25-year-old has scored only four Premier League goals this season in 22 games, raising questions about the forward’s future at Old Trafford.

When does Martial’s contract expire?

Martial’s contract at Man United expires in 2024, so he still has three years to run on the deal he signed in 2019.

However, he has struggled to show that he is a long-term solution in the number 9 position – with Man Utd expected to spend heavily for a new striker this summer.

Martial joined Man Utd from Monaco for a fee of up to £58 million in 2015.

He has since scored 78 goals in 258 games, a goalscoring return that many consider is not prolific enough for a team that wants to win the Premier League.

Sunday’s game proved to be another scoreless appearance for Martial in France colours, although he did manage to grab an assist for Ousmane Dembele.
