Maignan transfer 'OFF' as Romano confirms Chelsea WON'T sign Milan star before Club World Cup

Chelsea will not sign Mike Maignan before the Club World Cup transfer deadline despite intense talks with Milan, with Fabrizio Romano confirming that a deal is now ‘off’.
The Blues had heavily pursued a deal for Maignan in the hopes of signing him before the close of the mini transfer window ahead of the Club World Cup, the deadline of which is on Tuesday night.
Chelsea saw their initial bid of €10 million rejected by Milan, with the Italian side thought to be holding out for closer to €30m for their starting goalkeeper, and a second offer of €15m was also turned down.
Maignan’s age, combined with the 29-year-old entering the final year of his contract and refusing to sign an extension, meant Chelsea were reluctant to match Milan’s demands despite multiple rounds of talks.
According to Romano, Chelsea were reluctant to pay a ‘Club World Cup tax’ and they maintain their ‘full trust’ in their current goalkeeping crop of Djordje Petrovic, Robert Sanchez, Filip Jorgensen and young prospect Mike Penders.
Chelsea are now likely focused on cutting down the number of goalkeepers on their books, with Kepa Arrizabalaga on course to join Arsenal, while backup Marcus Bettinelli could join Manchester City after being released by the Blues.
Chelsea set to make decisions on overcrowded goalkeeping spot
It remains to be seen whether Chelsea revive their pursuit of Maignan later in the summer, with Enzo Maresca’s side having held a long-standing interest in the Frenchman.

Milan may still look to cash in on Maignan if he continues to hold out over signing a new deal, with the Serie A giants not looking to lose their star man on a free transfer next summer.
However, much will depend on whether Chelsea can find new clubs for some of their other goalkeeping contingent, with no fewer than seven shotstoppers on their books currently.
Sanchez is now expected to lead Chelsea through the Club World Cup, which starts on Sunday, although his future could still be in question over the course of the summer, while Petrovic and Jorgensen could also depart on loan if not permanent sales.
