Rangers ready to unlock €7m star as key transfer advantage emerges

Rangers have launched a £6 million (€7m) bid for PSV winger Couhaib Driouech but face competition from Celta Vigo for the player.

The 24-year-old could answer some of the major problems that Derek McInnes’ squad has faced early in the season – and the Ibrox giants have one important card to play that could help secure the signature of the Morocco U23 international.

Rangers have already had one bid rejected, but their persistence for Driouech is justified as he could be a potentially season-changing signing for the club. But they faced renewed competition from Celta.

A pacy winger who loves to dribble

With the Ibrox squad crying out for pace on the flank and an attitude to perform on the big stage, Dutch football expert Dylan ter Laak says that Driouech ticks both boxes – even if the former Excelsior player is far from perfect.

“Most of the time he has to come as a substitute, since there are better options at PSV,” he explained to FootballTransfers. “But in the Champions League he managed to show himself during some big matches.

“His strengths are his pace and his dribbling, even though sometimes he tries to take the dribbling too far and then ends up losing the ball.

“Scoring goals isn't his biggest asset, which showed during last season’s away game at Ajax, when he managed to miss a chance that 99.9% of the time is a goal.”

Nevertheless, with 10 direct goal contributions last season in the Eredivisie, he had a hand in a strike every 96.4 minutes he was on the park – an excellent strike rate.

This improved even further in the Champions League, where he scored three goals (two away to Liverpool), and produced assists against Napoli and Atletico Madrid.

Is he worth it?

Given his erratic output, though, is he worth the money that Rangers are set to pay? After all, he is only a squad player with PSV.

Driouech’s Estimated Transfer Value (ETV) sits at €4.8m, which suggests that Rangers are overpaying for him, yet a quick look at his history offers a better understanding of why McInnes’ side are prepared to go so high.

His peak ETV sits at €6.7m, which is roughly where the Gers are in their offer to PSV. He hit this figure as recently as April, so it’s certainly not ancient history and provides justification for the big bid.

A potential star

Driouech, meanwhile, could be a key player at Rangers – and this is an important point that could also help them fend off interest from Celta.

Data analytics firm SciSports projects that he would arrive at Ibrox as an important first-team member of the squad, yet he has the potential to evolve into the absolute best player at Ibrox.

By contrast, the experts believe that at Celta, he would never become anything more than a squad player.

For a 24-year-old about to hit the peak years of his career, this could be an important distinction. Rangers can offer him Ibrox stardom, whereas the risk is that he could continue to drift at Celta.
