Ex-Celtic attacker Aiden McGeady has told his former club to sign Motherwell forward Tawanda Maswanhise during the upcoming summer transfer window.

The 23-year-old has enjoyed an excellent second season at Fir Park, scoring 22 goals in 41 games across all competitions, and he has been nominated for the PFA Scotland Player of the Year award as a result of his exploits for Jens Berthel Askou’s side.

Maswanhise, who joined Motherwell from Leicester City in 2024, has been deployed as a centre forward and a right winger in almost equal measure this campaign, although he has more frequently played in the former position since the turn of the year.

Celtic and Rangers have both been credited with interest in the Zimbabwe international in recent months and they are expected to go head-to-head for his signature when the 2026 summer transfer window opens in June.

Both clubs are believed to be in the market for attacking reinforcements, with Celtic in particular keen to bolster their forward options amid the impending exits of Tomas Cvancara, Joel Mvuka and Junior Adamu when their loan spells expire at the end of the season.

Kelechi Iheanacho has also been linked with a Celtic Park departure, with the club yet to decide whether or not to offer him a contract extension. If the Nigerian does leave the Scottish giants, they will be required to sign an adequate replacement and McGeady has urged his former club to consider a move for Maswanhise.

Official Tawanda Maswanhise transfer verdict issued

“I really like him,” McGeady told GO Radio (via Glasgow World). “I think there was a lot of talk about Celtic being interested in him in January.

“I didn't think it would happen because Motherwell wouldn't want to lose him unless it was a ridiculous bid. I don't think that was going to come from Celtic, because you look at the players that Celtic brought in, every signing was a loan effectively. I didn't see it happening.

“But come the summer, he's a player that I'd be looking at to go, like you've done it in this league, come in, let's take you.100%, I'd be looking to bring him in.”

Meanwhile, ex-Rangers forward Greg Stewart believes a move to Ibrox could also be on the cards.

“I rate him. I do,” Stewart said. “I really rate him and he's willing to run. He's willing to run in behind and I think Rangers really lack that in the front line. Players willing to run beyond for the team. You might not get it but you're willing to run. It causes a wee bit of confusion in the back line to make them think.

“And maybe they'll go back 10 yards and it creates space in front. I like him. I rate him. I don't know how much they'll want from him, because I think he's under contract for a couple of more years. They lost Lennon Miller last summer and still performed.”

Maswanhise has one year remaining on his current contract at Motherwell, but the club have the option to extend this by a further 12 months if they wish, which is something they are highly likely to finalise given his form this season.
