Celtic make final decision on January transfer
Celtic boss Wilfried Nancy has reportedly decided against recalling Stephen Welsh from his loan spell at Motherwell during the upcoming January transfer window.
The 25-year-old has excelled since arriving at Fir Park on a temporary deal on 1 September and rumours had suggested that he could be set to return to Celtic next month in order to bolster the first-team squad available to Nancy.
However, the Frenchman has decided against bringing Welsh back to Celtic Park as he believes the central defender will benefit from playing regular football at Motherwell for the remainder of the 2025-26 campaign.
That is according to The Daily Record, who report that Nancy had considered a January recall for the Celtic academy graduate before eventually opting against a deal.
Welsh has made 68 first-team appearances for Celtic, but he spent last season on loan at Belgian side KV Mechelen and the Scottish giants decided to send him to Motherwell on a temporary basis this summer.
Since his arrival at Fir Park, Welsh has been a regular at centre-back and he has played a key role in their push for European football this term.
Celtic’s January transfer plan revealed
While Celtic have decided against recalling Welsh in January, they are expected to be fairly busy during the winter window.
A deal has already been agreed for Hayato Inamura to join FC Tokyo on loan, while reports suggest that Daizen Maeda, Paulo Bernardo and several others may also depart Celtic Park next month.
In regards to incomings, Celtic are eager to sign a new centre forward and they have been heavily linked with both Evan Ferguson and Wessam Abou Ali in recent weeks. Meanwhile, the club have also been tipped to finalise permanent deals for Derby County loanee Bobby Clark and Columbus Crew star Diego Rossi when the window opens.
