Celtic plot two January signings as O'Neill eyes additional reinforcements

Celtic have already identified their first two targets for the January transfer window, despite significantly bolstering the squad at Martin O’Neill’s disposal over the summer.

The Bhoys brought in 10 new players before the Scottish transfer window closed last Thursday, including the club-record signing of Bodo/Glimt striker Kasper Hogh, and midfield duo Mika Baur and Joel van den Berg to replace the departed Arne Engels.

Meanwhile, the club finalised the loan signings of several talented youngsters, with Chelsea academy pair Shumaira Mheuka and Landon Emenalo among the stars to arrive on temporary deals for the duration of the 2026-27 campaign.

So far this season, Celtic have won all five of their Scottish Premiership matches, and sit three points clear of Hearts in the table, but they are already assessing the transfer market ahead of the January window.

It remains to be seen if the Hoops will rekindle their interest in Torino midfielder Gvidas Ginietis, following their failed move for the Lithuania star over the summer, however Alan Nixon has confirmed that both Luke Chambers and Ryoya Morishita are on the club’s radar.

Chambers will leave Liverpool on loan when the winter window opens, with Celtic understood to be among his admirers, while the club were keen to sign Morishita after selling Reo Hatate to Blackburn Rovers, but they were unable to finalise an agreement.

Despite this, it’s expected that O’Neill’s side will look to bring him to Celtic Park in 2027 amid his eye-catching form for Blackburn.

Martin O’Neill issues Celtic transfer verdict

“I'm delighted to get players, [I’m] genuinely pleased,” O’Neill admitted when asked about Celtic’s business in the transfer window this summer (via Sky Sports).

“The difficulty is that you only have to look at the UEFA list. Some young lads will be disappointed not being able to make that particular UEFA squad. So there's only so many places that we could fill.

“If we can avoid serious injury to the players here, people not being out for endless lengths of time, then I'm happy with it.”

He continued: “I'm pleased with the players that we've got in. We've got them in and I genuinely want to get on with it now.

“Ideally, it would be great to have got players in earlier to get them bedded in. It doesn't matter. Happy, really happy to have the players that we have.”
